ZS Genetics Inc makes a bid for the X price
An article in the MIT Technology Review recently made me aware that ZS Genetics has entered the contest for the Archon X price for Genomics (100 human genomes in 10 days).
ZS Genetics are developing a unique approach to DNA sequencing based on electron microscopy of labeled DNA strands. The technology can potentially sequence very long and contiguous strands of DNA (kilo bases) and can therefore deliver haplotype phase data and help to resolve complex repeat regions.
In comparison to other novel DNA sequencing methods it is a static method based on an image of a fully synthesized DNA strand whereas other technologies are based on the recording of the DNA synthesis process as it occurs.

Glad someone has noticed. We’re not ready to launch yet, but it ought to give fantastic data, unless you like your reads under 5kb. Wish us well.

Mailund,
We are aiming at speeds about the same as the second generation stuff. Only reason to use ours will be for long reads, perhaps the informatics advantages that brings. Hope to have demo system later this year, commercial stuff early 2009. And I agree on the vapourware comment; if it is, I am completely screwed. - Wm Glover, Pres/CEO of ZSG.

I’m crossing my fingers that it is not vapour ware
I loved the nano-pore idea but I haven’t heard anything about that recently…
I would just love to see reads that give us phased data!

Mailund, there is some info about nanopore sequencing to be found at: http://golgi.harvard.edu/branton/index.htm
